In this hectic and sometimes troubling world, Chanukah is a welcome opportunity to rejoice within the warmth of the Jewish community with our family and friends.  It’s an invaluable chance to reconnect with hope and to reflect on the challenges and triumph that are recorded in Jewish history.

It has been a privilege to return to Jewish Federations of Canada – UIA as a consultant for regional communities and to direct the annual campaign.  In October, I had the pleasure of introducing Dr. Mordechai Kedar to over a dozen communities in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Atlantic Canada. Dr. Kedar spoke eloquently and frankly about the operational structure of Islamic State and its impact on modern society.   During the speaking tour and in the course of my visits to other communities, I had a chance to reconnect with people I’ve known for many years and also make new acquaintances in familiar communities.

I have been an active Jewish community professional for over 40 years. In this time I have seen the world change. Yet much of it remains the same. The global Jewish community has grown stronger and more resilient as the world becomes more complex.  Israel, now 67, is a formidable player on the world stage.

Yet as strong as it has become, the Jewish state still needs our help.

Jewish Federations of Canada-UIA supports social welfare and other programs that improve lives across Israel.  Through direct investments and alliances with partner agencies, JFC-UIA has a meaningful impact on communities across Israel.  Every day, Israelis aged newborn-102 attend participate in programs that enhance the quality of their lives, and consequently the lives of their families and larger communities.

For instance, in Qiryat Shmona, lonely senior citizens are able to spend the day at the local community centre where they receive two meals and a wide selection of classes to choose from, including yoga, woodwork and drawing.

In Bar-Ilan medical faculty in Tzfat, scientists are making medical discoveries at Israel’s newest medical school. The faculty also participates in outreach programs to the local community.

Youth at risk in communities across Israel are receiving the special attention they need to succeed from mentors and access to community resources so they can thrive. The residual effect on the families is significant.

All of these programs, and hundreds more operated by our partners and affiliates in Israel, are only partially funded by the Israeli government. They rely on donations to operate.
